Natasha’s to be sold
The Lyon County sheriff has rescheduled the tax sale of Natasha’s Billiards & Lounge, 627 Commercial St.
The sale will be at 10 a.m. Feb. 17 in the lobby of the Lyon County Courthouse.
The sale was scheduled for Dec. 1, but new claims by the federal government forced postponement.
In November, the business’ debts were calculated at about $350,000. The Lyon County appraiser estimated the value of the land and building at $239,400.
Clear that snow
Emporia Fire Chief Jack Taylor said in a news release Wednesday that the city has been getting questions again about the city policy on sidewalk snow. People want to know what the ordinance says and what enforcement provisions there are.
Here is the ordinance in part:
It is “the duty of the owner and of the occupant of any lots abutting upon any sidewalks to cause to be removed from such sidewalks all snow and ice within five (5) hours from the time the said snow has fallen or ice has accumulated; provided that if the snow falls or the ice accumulates upon said sidewalks in the nightime, removal of the same must be made within five (5) hours after sunrise on the following day.”
The ordinance provides a fine of up to $50 upon conviction for a violation and says the city manager can have a walk cleaned and charge the property owners.
Complaints about uncleared sidewalks should be directed to Jeff Lynch, 343-4285.

Why don't we just pass a citywide ordinace against snow? That should do it. Think of it as a cost saver for the state. Do you know how many Medicare recipients fall because of the ice and snow every year. Someone call Jim Barnett!
