Emporia High’s boys swimming team finished last out of six teams at the Manhattan home meet on Wednesday.
The Spartans were strongest in diving, where Derek Krause finished second, collecting 196.20 points. Brett Schaefer finished fifth, Sam Nolan 11th and Alex Neises 12th out of 13 divers.
Three Spartan relay teams earned top-10 finishes. The team of Dillon Supiran, Jacob Hastings, Cody Yevak and Cord Stanley finished seventh in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 2:00.03. In the 200 freestyle relay, the team of Tommy Hudson, Yevak, Jared Schaefer and Justin Garcia earned an eighth-place finish, and in the 400 free relay, Stanley, Michael Stauffer, Ryan Schlup and Supiran swam to eighth place.
Schlup posted the Spartans’ best individual swimming finish on the day, racing to seventh place in the 500 freestyle with a time of 6:15.07. Stauffer and Schlup both earned top-10 finishes in the 200 individual medley; Stauffer finished ninth with a time of 2:38.66, Schlup 10th at 2:40.35. Stauffer also earned a top-10 spot in the 100 breaststroke, finishing 10th, and Supiran finished ninth in the 100 freestyle.
Emporia finished with 214 points, 87 behind fifth-place Salina Central. Olathe East won the meet easily, finishing with 592 points to beat Manhattan’s 415.
The Spartans will next be in action on Jan. 29, when they travel to Olathe East for a 4 p.m. meet.
