With his father in the hospital after suffering a mild stroke on Tuesday, Kale Schankie made a game-winning shot for Madison in a 52-51 victory at Waverly.
The Bulldogs trailed by 14 points with six minutes left and used a fullcourt man-to-man press to rally to within one with 10 seconds left. Madison coach Alan Brown set up a play for Michael Luthi with Schankie and Henry Ott as the second and third options.
Luthi drove baseline and had his shot partially blocked. Schankie caught the miss on the weak side and got the putback with three seconds left to give Madison the win.
“We’re really a family-oriented team and we kind of got behind Kale,” Brown said. “And it was fitting he was able to make the game-winning shot.”
Madison struggled with turnovers and fouling in the first three quarters. Waverly made 20-of-29 free throws and had a 10-point lead entering the fourth quarter. When the lead ballooned to 14 with six minutes left, Brown called a timeout and said he felt his team still had a chance to win.
“I think they kind of knew as poorly as we were playing we could still make a last run,” Brown said. “I challenged them to step it up.”
Caleb Hamilton helped lead the comeback, scoring five points and getting three steals during a 12-0 run. Hamilton finished with 11 points; Luthi led the Bulldogs with 12 and Schankie added nine.

Cole Krueger and Bradley Argabright each put up 16 points, leading undefeated Olpe to a 21-point victory at Burlingame.
Matt Redeker added 11 points for the Eagles, who jumped out to a 10-point lead in the first quarter and led 26-14 at halftime.
“I think that we (were) able to get to the inside, and we got off to a good start,” Eagles coach Chris Schmidt said. “We got off to a 12-2 lead, and after that, we just kind of played so-so. We did enough good things to stay away from them, but there’s definitely areas where we’ve gotta get better. And we talked about it after the game, that we got an opportunity to put ’em away. We had a comfortable lead, but it was just one of those where I thought we could’ve pushed a little more, and we didn’t.”
Argabright buried four 3-pointers and scored eight quick points for the Eagles early in the second half.
“Brad’s been shooting the ball pretty good for us the last couple of games, and that’s good — we need that,” Schmidt said. “He’s kind of been challenged to step up, and he’s done a good job with that.”

Hartford got off to a slow start at Marais des Cygnes and could never recover.
The Trojans led by 18 at halftime, getting to a big lead by making four of their six 3-pointers in the first half and by outrebounding the Jaguars.
“They shot the ball extremely well from the outside tonight and did a much better job on the glass than we did,” Hartford coach Chuck Ewy said. “So we were in a hole early and had to fight an uphill battle the rest of the game. ... We were just not putting forth the effort we need to be a good rebounding team.”
The Jags, who lost their fourth straight, cut the lead to 11 several times in the second half, but they never got any closer.
“We did a better job guarding them on the perimeter in the second half,” Ewy said. “But they still were able to execute on the offensive end and convert missed shots into baskets.”
Craig Woods led Hartford with 24 points and Michael Wilson added five.

Madison picked up its defensive pressure in the second quarter, helping the Bulldogs put up 26 points and pull away from Waverly after trailing at the end of the first.
The Bulldogs built a 22-point lead in the second half, then watched Waverly whittle that deficit down to 12 before Madison put together another run late.
Offsetting a relatively quiet offensive night for Shelby Buster was Morgan Stout, who put up 27 points to lead the Bulldogs.
“She took it to the hole,” Madison coach Glen Stout said. “She took it to the hole and made some good dishes when they (came) off and got her, and they were pretty much shutting Shelby down inside. They were double-teaming her, and Morgan stepped up and the rest of the girls really stepped up. Our girls that only average three or four a game stepped up and had six or eight. And that was the key to the game right there, was the rest of the team stepping up to make up for them double-teaming Shelby.”
Buster had 13 for Madison (7-2, 4-2 LCL), Chelcie Schankie had 10 and Kylie Olson had eight.
Madison went to the free throw line 35 times, making 18. Waverly was 11-of-23 at the line.
