History was made Tuesday when Barack Obama was sworn in as our nation’s 44th president.
Taking the oath of office in front of a crowd estimated at around 1 million people, and with millions more watching around the nation and the world, Obama is riding an unprecendented wave of popularity into office.
His charisma and charm created an optimism that propelled him into the Oval Office, but now the real work begins.
The big question is yet to be answered — does a community organizer with four years in the Senate have the experience to run our country? And will he be able to bring about the real change that he promised?
Our nation is in dire need of a new direction, but the president cannot take it in a new direction alone. To bring about real change, the work must be done by senators and representatives. Will our elected officials play partisan politics or will they work together with the president to push America forward?
The generation of young people who were swept up in Obamamania may get some life lessons on how the real world works when they don’t see a miraculous change happen overnight.
Our country is hoping for change. Will change happen? Will the politics be different? We all hope it will.
Now we have to wait and see.
