Free throw champs move on to district
Five boys and girls from Emporia and surrounding areas won local titles in their age groups at the 2009 Knights of Columbus free throw championship on Saturday.
Austin Anderson won the 10-year old boys’ division; Alison Alingh won the 11-year old girls’ title; Brett Engle won the 11-year old boys’ title; Seki Anderson won the 12-year old girls’ division and Bethany Bowman won the 14-year old girls division.
All five winners will move on to the district competition on Feb. 1. Winners at the district level will move on to the state competition.
Hamels signs
extension with Phillies
Cole Hamels signed a three-year, $20.5 million contract with the Phillies on Sunday, keeping the 25-year-old World Series MVP winner in Philadelphia through the 2011 season.
Hamels went 4-0 in the postseason with an 1.80 ERA as the Phillies claimed their first championship since 1980. He won the first game in three playoff series and took the MVP award in the NL championship series against the Dodgers.
Hamels lives in Philadelphia year round and promised a good portion of his contact would be donated to his charitable foundation.
Oddsmakers favor Steelers in Super Bowl
Las Vegas oddsmakers aren’t buying into the Arizona Cardinals, no matter how many times they win as underdogs this postseason.
