A wide variety of workshops and conferences are available this spring for teachers of all grade levels and subject areas. The workshops are offered through Emporia State University’s Jones Institute for Educational Excellence.
Workshops
F Jan. 29 — Revision-Focused Assessment: Using Student-Generated Rubrics to Fuel Writing and Revision; Featured Presenters: Matt Copeland and Suzy Oertel. For grades 6-12 language arts teachers, this workshop will walk participants through the process of revision-focused assessment and give them the opportunity to try their hands at implementing the strategy themselves. Drawing from samples of real student writing and collective writing expertise, participants will all leave the day with ready-to-copy handouts, procedures, and the confidence necessary to transform the teaching of writing and revision in the classroom.
F Feb. 3 — Efficient Learning Strategies for Math and Science Teachers; Featured Presenter: Kelly Deters. For Grades 7-12 math and science teachers, this workshop will explore the principles of efficient learning — how to get students to learn what they need to learn with better performance, less effort and less time. All information presented is research-based and tested. Participants should bring sample worksheets, assignments, notes, PowerPoint presentations, labs, etc. from their classes to transform using efficient instructional design strategies.
F Feb. 12 — Gaining on the Pain: Strategies & Interventions to Prevent Bullying; Featured Presenter: Barry Stark. This workshop is for principals, counselors and classroom teachers since bullying prevention and intervention is a school-wide responsibility. This interactive workshop will provide participants with information that will reinforce what we know about bullying, provide new information, and offer strategies and interventions for bullying prevention for schools and for parents.
