Michael Stauffer’s been battling illness and didn’t do much swimming on Tuesday during Emporia High’s trip to Topeka’s Hummer Sports Park.
On Thursday, the recovering Stauffer looked pretty healthy in winning his heat in the Emporia Invitational’s 500-yard freestyle race. Stauffer finished third overall in the event, the Spartans’ best placing of the day, with a time of 6 minutes, 4.52 seconds.
“I wanted to go under six,” Stauffer said. “But 6:04, I can live with that for right now. (I’ll) cut some more time later on.”
Emporia finished sixth out of seven teams at the event with 277 points. Right behind Stauffer in the 500 free was Ryan Schlup, who finished fourth with a time of 6:08.46. Other top-five finishes for EHS included Cody Yevak in fourth in the 100 butterfly, Dillon Supiran finishing fifth in his first run in the 200 freestyle, and two top-five showings by relay teams. The 200 medley relay team of Cody Muckenthaler, Jacob Hastings, Yevak and Tommy Hudson finished fifth, and the 400 freestyle team of Cord Stanley, Yevak, Stauffer and Supiran raced to fourth place to close the meet.
