Fire safety

Wednesday, January 14, 2009

Michael Leith, Ryan Steinkuhler, Karl Kayser, Bruce Neill and Louis Patrick Tucker died in house fires in Emporia last year. One death is too many for our community.

Emporia Fire Marshall Tom Andrews announced last week that the fire department had received a grant from the Kansas Department of Health to give away 450 smoke detectors to area residents. To qualify there are only two stipulations — the house must be occupied with people over 65 years old or by families with young children.

Firefighters will come to your house and install detectors throughout the house as well as educate the homeowners about fire prevention.

Let’s improve fire safety in our homes and businesses in the hope that there are no fire-related deaths this year.

To receive your detectors call 343-4230 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Don’t wait to call because the life it saves may be your own.

Chris;
FYI;
Karl Kayser died last year 3 miles north of Americus as he was filling his planter with seed. He was a 94 year old farmer. There was a controlled burn taking place near him, which was getting out of control but it did not have anything to do with his death. He was out in the open air as farmers usually are, trying to get his seed planted when the Lord called him home. That is the way it was, and that is the way I like to remember his passing, not in some house fire in Emporia.
The other folks that you mentioned here I do not know, so I accept your word that they died in house fires in Emporia.
