Candidate filings are beginning to trickle in for positions on boards of education in Emporia, Southern Lyon County and North Lyon County.
A spokesperson for the Lyon County Clerkâs office said that Brent Windsor filed on Monday for the Emporia board of education seat he was appointed to fill in September. He replaced Homer Garza, who resigned because of difficulties he encountered attending meetings after he accepted a job out of town.
Emporia board positions held by Mary Helmer and Mike Crouch also will expire this year. As of Tuesday afternoon, neither had filed for re-election.
In Southern Lyon County, five seats are up for grabs as a result of redistricting that was approved by voters last fall.
Bill Veatch, whose term will expire this year, filed for re-election for Position 3 on Dec. 18.
Craig Clark filed on Monday this week for an unexpired seat he currently holds; it is designated Position 1.
Position 6, held by Kent Grieder, and Position 2, held by Jeanette Schmidt, both will expire this year. Neither board member has yet filed for re-election, nor has Kenneth Hamma n, whose unexpired Position 5 will be up for grabs because of the changes in district boundaries.
No one has filed for three positions coming open on the North Lyon County school board. Those seats now are held by Joe Fehr, Bill Leffler and James Scott Davis.
Candidates have until noon on Jan. 27 to file documents for their candidacies with the Lyon County Clerk. If a primary election is needed, it will be held March 3. The general election will be April 7.
