Council Grove’s Sean Carr scored 10 of his game-high 19 points in the fourth quarter at the free throw line to help Council Grove pull away from Northern Heights for a 63-43 victory.
The Braves made 18-of-22 free throws in the fourth quarter and 25-of-38 for the game.
“We got some good looks and they weren’t going to give us layups. Give them credit for that,” Council Grove coach Bruce Hula said. “They played hard, but my kids just hit free throws tonight.”
Council Grove also cut down on its turnovers from the night before. On Monday, the Braves lost at Osage City and committed 34 turnovers. Northern Heights, like Osage City, used a full-court press, but on Tuesday, the Braves committed only seven turnovers.
“We handled their pressure better than we did (Monday) night,” Hula said. “We got the ball in the half court and we could set some stuff up.”
Once the Braves got the ball into the half court, their two seniors took over. Carr dominated from the post, and senior guard Scott Bowles scored 15 points.
With the win, Council Grove moved out of a tie with Northern Heights for second place in the Flint Hills League.

MdCV boys 59,
Madison 46
Madison entered Tuesday’s game against Marias des Cygnes Valley shooting 38 percent from the free throw line.
The Bulldogs’ percentage dropped Tuesday. They shoot only 5-for-15 from the line, while MdCV went 23-for-28, with guard Brandon Litch making all nine of his attempts and scoring 23 points.
“The game of basketball is so fundamental,” Madison coach Alan Brown said. “If you do the proper things, results will come. We didn’t rebound well. We didn’t shot from the free throw line as well, and when you don’t do a couple of those aspects, it’s hard to stay in the game.”
Madison was still in the game entering the fourth quarter. The Bulldogs trailed by three going into the final quarter, but MdCV quickly pulled away to end Madison’s two-game winning streak.
“In the fourth quarter, Marias des Cygnes seemed like they wanted it more,” Brown said. “They hit their shots and we didn’t hit ours. It seemed like there was a lid on our basket that fourth quarter. We gave Marias des Cygnes second and third opportunities. We didn’t rebound as well as would have liked us too.”
Reece Childers led Madison with 13 points, Henry Ott scored 12 and Michael Luthi added 10 points.

Olpe ran away early, opening the game by outscoring the winless Mustangs 34-2 in the first quarter.
“We shot the ball well, like happens sometimes when you get in a game against a team that’s struggling,” Nelson said. “Things just went right for us. We did a lot of things well and shot the ball well and that kind of got us off to that big first quarter.”

“I thought that we came out and played well tonight,” NHHS coach Tim Riemann said. “I thought that we did a good job pushing the ball up the court and finding the open man. We also stepped up and hit some big shots.”
Miller also played well on the defensive end. She had three steals and a block, along with eight rebounds. Sky Linsey had a game-high four steals and Northern Heights had 12 steals as a team.
“Defensively I thought that we did a good job of forcing them to speed up their game and force some turnovers,” Riemann said.
Sarah Boline scored 11 points and had seven rebounds for NHHS and Amy Lee added 10 points.

“Outstanding game,” coach Gene Windle said of Wells’ effort. “Seniors came through and stepped it up on (the) defensive end.”
Windle also liked what he saw out of the Bulldogs’ bench play as they moved to an even 3-3 in the Flint Hills League and 4-3 overall.
“Starters played well together, had a couple in foul trouble early,” he said. “Ashley Cahoone finished strong for us.”
