AMERICUS — More than $1,800 was raised Sunday evening to help Delbert and Ethel Swift, who lost their home to a fire on Christmas Day 2008.
The Swifts were not home at the time of the fire. A fundraiser was held at The Breck Cafe in Americus Sunday evening. There was food and live entertainment, and free-will donations were collected. The event was a hit.
“I’d have to say this place was full like two or three times,” said Kathy Tatum, manager of The Breck. “There was no place to sit. We ended up having people take to-go boxes because there was no place to sit.”
The total raised was $1,849 and some change. Even people who didn’t attend the event came in and left money.
“Overall we just had a really good turnout,” Tatum said. “It was also Ethel’s birthday. It in the long run it helped give her a really good birthday.”
Donations are still being taken at Casey’s General Store in Americus and can also be sent to KansasLand Bank, P.O. Box, 374, Americus, KS 66835. Donations can be sent in care of the Swift Fire Fund.
