EHS boys ranked 5th in 5A State poll

Tuesday, January 13, 2009

The Emporia High boys broke into the weekly Kansas Basketball Coaches Association’s Class 5A rankings released Monday.

In the first KBCA high school rankings since Dec. 15, the Spartans (5-2, 3-0 Centennial League) vaulted from unranked all the way to No. 5 in Class 5A. They traveled to Topeka West last Tuesday and won 45-38, then defeated Shawnee Heights 51-42 on Friday.

Ranking ahead of the Spartan boys in 5A were Highland Park in the top spot, followed by Miege, McPherson and Hays. In the six-through-10 spots were Lansing, Harmon, Bishop Carroll, Andover Central and Salina Central.

The Emporia High Lady Spartans (5-2, 3-1) slid from ninth in the previous 5A girls rankings to 10th following their 55-40 loss to Shawnee Heights on Friday. The T-Birds are ranked seventh in Class 5A. Bishop Carroll is ranked No. 1, followed by Liberal, St. Thomas Aquinas, Bishop Miege, Salina South and Gardner-Edgerton. Great Bend ranks eighth, Lansing ninth.

Among other area boys teams, Osage City is ranked eighth in Class 3A after not being ranked on Dec. 15, and undefeated Olpe held its No. 3 spot from the last poll.

Lebo’s and Olpe’s girls teams both earned Class 2A rankings this week. Lebo is ranked fifth, moving up from 10th place last week, and Olpe is ranked ninth after being unranked in the last poll. Madison’s girls maintained the No. 10 spot they held last month in Class 1A.
