An old program to involve Emporians in policing their neighborhoods is being revitalized. The Emporia Police Department will have a meeting to organize the Neighborhood Watch program at 7 p.m. Thursday at William Lindsay White Auditorium, Conference Room No. 1.
“The Neighborhood Watch principle is founded on neighbors watching out for other neighbors during times when criminal activity would most likely occur and reporting suspicious activity to police,” said Brendy Allison, of the Emporia Police Department.
The public is encouraged to attend Thursday’s meeting. Conference Room No. 1 can be reached through the west entrance of the auditorium.
In a related development, the police department has a new property-marking kit. The kit uses a special ink that can only be seen using with a special ultraviolet light. People can check out the kit at the counter in the police department, 518 Mechanic St., and use it to mark their property with a personal ID number. If the property is stolen and then recovered, the marking will tell police who the owner is.
