Q If Barack Obama’s new economic recovery plan includes billions of dollars for new infrastructure, will Lyon County try to get some of that money to replace the Americus Road? It seems like a perfect opportunity to do so.
A Lyon County Commission Chairman Scott Briggs would be delighted if money became available for the Americus Road; however, he’s not expecting that to happen.
“I’d be surprised if Barack Obama had as much money to do that,” Briggs said.
Briggs said that the county has a five-year transportation plan with numerous road projects that need attention, including bridges.
“I don’t see a thing wrong with that project (Americus Road) if it falls into priorities,” Briggs said, noting that Emporia’s growth to the north and west at some point will demand work on the Americus Road.
Briggs is a bit skeptical that can happen soon.
“The way the state and the federal government have been as of late, I’d like to see the money in the bank before I’d start a project like that,” he said.

While not the best road in the world, the main problem with the AM Rd is the drivers who use it. Yes, it could be smoother and not hold water in the ruts like it does, the S-curves could use some straightening out or perhaps a bit of banking, but for the most part it's not that bad until you get folks driving 25 mph or trying to go 70 and passing on the curves.
