Osage City blows out Chase County in Flint Hills League matchup

Paige Fort had a game-high 13 points, leading the Osage City girls over Flint Hills foe Chase County, 58-25. Osage City used a 23-8 first quarter to pull away early and led 38-13 at half.

Fort was joined in double figures by Katie Schroeder, who added 11 points. For the Bulldogs, Breana Riley and Kylee Scott both scored six points. Coach Chris Kirkpatrick said before the game the team talked about getting off to a good start. The Indians did so by scoring the first 14 points from the field.

“We came out ready right out off the bat, that’s what our pregame talk was about, getting started early,” Kirkpatrick. “We jumped on them early and just kept it going. Paige really stepped up tonight and really played well for us.”

Lebo girls 47, Waverly 28

It was a night for the Laflin’s in Lebo as Morgan Laflin, whose brother Adam scored 45, scored 16 to lead her team to a win over Waverly. Brittany Hase joined Laflin in double figures with 12 points on the evening. Lebo used a 15-9 run over the first quarter to hold off the Bulldogs 23-16 at the break. Only one Bulldog finished the night in double figures, as the Wolves kept WHS to only two points in the third quarter.

Northern Heights girls 43, West Franklin 17

The Northern Heights Ladycats were tough on the boards and even tougher on defense in a win over West Franklin. They held the Falcons to only six points through the first 16 minutes and took an 18-6 lead into the break. They shot 40.8 from the field, while they held their opponents to only 19.4 percent and outrebounded WFHS 29-15 on the night. Amy Lee and Andrea Miller were in double figures, scoring 10 points apiece. For Miller, it was a double-double as she also pulled down 11 rebounds. Miller along with Tess Hobson added four assists each on the evening.

“I thought we played very well tonight,” coach Tim Reimann said. “The first quarter we jumped out to a early lead and played some pretty solid defense. The third quarter we came out aggressive and did a good job executing offensively. This was a good win for us and I thought that we took a step forward tonight.”

Osage City boys 58, Chase County 40

For the boys team in Osage City, the Indians were looking to improve on things coming back from the Christmas breaks. Though coach Dennis Fort said they didn’t fix everything, it was enough to pull out a win. They were able to double the Bulldogs score in the first period, outscoring them 28-14. Osage City was led by Tyler Bartee, who scored 15 points and was joined in double figures by Jake Keighley, who dropped in 14 points.

“A win’s a win, I didn’t think we played extremely well. It’s our second game back from Christmas and we’ve been working on things,” Fort said. “This gave us a chance to fix a few mistakes, and even though we didn’t fix them all, we played better than we did last week against Lyndon.”

Lebo boys 64, Waverly 54

Adam Laflin scored a game-high 45 points to lead Lebo to a win at home over Waverly.

The game seemed all square through one quarter as each team poured in ten. Laflin answered with 17 points in the second quarter, however, as his team outscored WHS 20-11 to take a 30-21 halftime lead. Steward led all Bulldogs with 13 points.

Northern Heights boys 61, West Franklin 56

In the boys game, Northern Heights staved off a late comeback and got a win in coach Lanny Massey’s 100th game as NHHS coach. Heights shot only 31.5 percent from the field but made 36 percent from the behind the arc to pull out the victory. The real work, however, was done at the line, as the Wildcats made 18 of 30 free throws, while West Franklin only managed six makes on the evening. The Wildcats were outrebounded by the Falcons, but won the turnover battle 23-17. Roman Murray led all scorers with 20 points and Nick Tabares pitched in 15. For West Franklin, Trey Wadkins scored 15 points to pace his team.

“We did not play very well tonight,” Massey said. “We really struggled shooting the the ball. Our kids were able to hit some big shots down the stretch and our 3-point shooting was just good enough to keep West Franklin at bay.”
