OLPE — Kathryn Flott, Olpe’s 6-foot sophomore, typically towers over opponents in the lane.
On Friday night, Hartford's 5-foot-11 Kellie Farr provided a new challenge for Flott, a chance to pick on someone her own size. And Flott did just that, scoring 29 points and grabbing 12 rebounds in a 62-18 win for the Eagles.
“It was nice to go up someone with my size,” Flott said. “I haven’t got a lot of that this season, and it was nice to know that I can do well with someone my size guarding me.”
Flott showed her full repertoire of moves against Farr and the Jaguars. She used a drop step in the post to score the game’s opening basket. She moved out to the perimeter later in the game when Hartford surrounded her in the post and made contested jump shots. She scored on lobs and putbacks, against zone, man-to-man and a diamond-and-one designed to stop her from touching the ball.
“When the big girls come out to try to guard us, we know she’s going to dominate anybody else inside,” senior Katie Moyer said. “So we just get her the ball and trust her to do what she can do.”
Flott’s domination was nothing new. In fact, her coach even thought she could have played better.
“I thought that tonight she missed some cribbies that she really should have made,” coach Jesse Nelson said, “but overall her game was good. She’s been very intelligent about how she’s used her fouls. Defensively, she’s played very well and really overall defensively we were pretty good.”
Flott held Farr to four points on 2-of-13 shooting, and Olpe held Hartford to 17 percent shooting for the game. The Jags got off to an especially cold start, and Olpe took advantaging, opening the game on a 10-0 run.
Flott scored the first five points of the game and had 12 points by the end of the first quarter, helping Olpe jump out to a 23-4 lead.
The Eagles opened the second half on another big run, 19-4, only this time it wasn’t just Flott. The Jaguars were using a zone and diamond-and-one to stop Flott — which didn’t work, she scored nine in the third quarter — and the defenses also opened things up for Moyer. Moyer made 3-pointers on consecutive possessions, sandwiched in between two Flott baskets during the 19-4 run.
“I do like the zone,” Moyer said. “That’s my favorite defense, but we don’t get it very often.”
Moyer also made two other 3-pointers in the first quarter, including a buzzer-beater, and finished with 14 points.
“I thought she was fairly patient about waiting for her threes and she shoots the ball pretty well,” Nelson said. “She hit some big ones that opened up the game.”
The Eagles only needed Flott and Moyer for three quarters and were able to rest their starters in the fourth quarter. The Eagles improved to 5-1 overall and 3-1 in the Lyon County League, their only loss coming to Lebo.
“After our loss, we knew that we had to work pretty hard over break and get some big wins to get our confidence back, but I think we’re getting up there again,” Moyer said.
