ALLEN — The Northern Heights girls had a size advantage, and they put it to use.
Playing the second of three games in four days, the Wildcats shared the ball, got it inside, knocked down some jump shots and finished strong, earning a 51-31 victory over Mission Valley on Thursday night at Heights.
The Wildcats and Vikings were making up a game originally scheduled for Dec. 16, when a snowstorm postponed a slew of games around the state. Coming off a narrow 37-33 win Tuesday night at Chase County, the Wildcats (6-1, 3-1) had an easier time in this one, withstanding the occasional mini-run.
“I thought for us, we just needed to do a good job of coming out and getting the ball inside,” Heights coach Tim Riemann said. “We obviously had a size advantage, and if we could get it in there and get some easy baskets, I thought we were gonna win the ballgame.”
Leading 11-5 at the end of the first, Heights pushed its lead up to 16 with a 10-0 run in the second quarter. Sarah Boline scored underneath on a high inbound lob from Amy Lee to make it 17-5, Leann Baird knocked down a jumper in the lane, and Lee then hit a jumper from the right wing to bring the score to 21-5. Mission Valley answered with a short run, including a couple of baskets by Aerielle Floyd, to draw within single digits again, but Baird knocked down a turnaround jumper at the halftime buzzer to put the Ladycats up 25-14 at the break.
