Each Friday, The Gazette salutes those who make Emporia and the surrounding area a better place to live and work. Give these folks a pat on the back ...

OXBOW DEVELOPMENT, which demolished the University Inn at 1839 Merchant St. The property will be redeveloped with an 18,000-square-foot apartment complex for ESU students.

• Concert pianist Robyn Meahl, who will perform a benefit concert for the Shiloh Home of Hope for Women. The event is tonight at 7 p.m. at Victory Fellowship Church.

• Elected officials Jim Kessler, Scott Briggs, Bob Davis and Marshall Miller, who had perfect attendance at city and county commission meetings.

• Bill Hanlon and area food producers who are exploring ways to make locally grown food more available to consumers.

• Kadie Watkins and Mick Allen Martin, who are the parents of the first baby born in the New Year for Lyon County. Lydia Rose Martin weighed 5 pounds, 4 ounces and was 18 inches long.

• James Williams, who has been named Emporia State University’s associate provost for enrollment management and vice president for strategic partnerships.

• Julie Stowe, who has accepted the position as Newman Regional Health’s chief nursing officer.

• The Emporia Fire Department, which will give away 450 smoke detectors. To receive a smoke detector, call 343-4230.

• Emporia public school teachers Gena Langley and Tiffany Shogren, who won 2009 Kansas Horizon Awards. The award recognizes exemplary teachers who are just starting their careers.
