Saalfeld in 2nd after day 1 of MIAA multi-events

Emporia State’s Craig Saalfeld is in second place in the men’s heptathlon after four of seven events on the first day at the MIAA Indoor Track and Field Championship in Warrensburg, Mo.
ESU’s Justine Davenport placed 11th in the women’s pentathlon, the only completed event of the championships so far.
Saalfeld did well in the speed and jumping events, winning the high jump with a mark of 6 feet, 8.75 inches and finishing second in the long jump and 60-meter dash. He placed sixth in the shot put.
Tony Granillo is also competing for ESU in the heptathlon and is in 11th place after four of seven events. His best placing in an individual event was a ninth-place showing in the long jump.
Davenport scored a career-high of 2,653 points in the five-event pentathlon. Her best individual showing was a fifth place finish in the 60-meter hurdles.
The heptathlon is new at the MIAA meet this year.
The MIAA Championships will begin in earnest today with the final three events of the heptathlon at 10 a.m. The individual field events will begin at 2:30 p.m. and prelims in the running events will start at 4:30 p.m. The championships will wrap up on Sunday.
