‘Read Aloud’ winner

Logan Barker, a junior at Madison High School, is one of four winners in the Kansas National Education Association’s “Read Aloud” contest. The contest, part of the KNEA’s observance of Read Across America 2009, encouraged students in elementary and secondary schools to write a letter to an author, living or dead, whose work had affected their perception of the world or themselves. The students then recorded their letters. Logan’s letter was written to George Orwell (the pen name of Eric Arthur Blair), the author of “1984.”

Logan is the son of Tray and Linda Barker. The other winners in the contest were Ashley Haverkamp, a senior at Nemaha Valley High School in Seneca; Maddie Foster, a fifth-grader at central Elementary School in Holton; and Hunter Wishart, an eighth-grader at El Dorado Middle School in El Dorado. Each student will receive a $50 gift certificate.
