In some parts of the country, the Girl Scouts are among the victims of the recession.
USA Today reported last week that pre-orders of Girl Scout cookies — an annual treat for many Americans — were down as much as 19 percent in some areas. Pre-orders are the orders taken before each Scout council orders its cookies for the year. Council leaders told the newspaper that pre-orders account for about 70 percent of cookie sales.
At Emporia’s Girl Scouts of the Kansas Heartland, Melissa Gray said that pre-sales in the local council were doing well.
“It’s going great here,” she said. “We’re on track to do as well as last year.”
In some areas of the country, sales are reported down, with declines ranging from less than 2 percent to about 50 percent.
The pre-sale period — when Scouts go door-to-door taking cookie orders — is over now in Lyon County, but cookies are still available for sale.
Gray said the Scouts would continue doing booth sales in Emporia businesses through March, and cookies are also available at the Amend Girl Scout Center, 1200 Burlingame Road.
For information on cookie sales, call the center at 342-4532.
