Tuesday

• Information about a popular leisure pastime will be provided by the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks at a “Fishing and Information Night” from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the Best Western Hospitality House Motel, 3021 W. Highway 50.

• Get “fat” before Lent at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church’s annual Shrove Tuesday Pancake Day. Serving will run from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at the church, 828 Commercial St. The cost is $5 for adults and $2 for children under 10.

F Discover “What green building really means” at the Flint Hills Technical College at 7:30 a.m. Advance registration is required and can be made by calling Karen Eklund, 343-3600.

Wednesday

• The Lyon County Commission will return to its weekly study session at 8 a.m. in the commission meeting room of the Lyon County Courthouse.

• The Emporia City Commission study session that will begin at 9 a.m. in Conference Room 1, at W.L. White Auditorium, Sixth Avenue and Mechanic Street.

• A new quarterly “Lunch and Learn” program is planned at the Emporia Area Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber and the United States Department of Agriculture Rural Development will be hosts for the first workshop, “Rural Energy for America,” that will begin at 11:30 a.m. in the Trusler Business Center, 719 Commercial St.

• Jean Baker of Goucer College will be guest speaker at a program, “Mary Todd Lincoln’s White House,” at 7 p.m. in the Granada Theatre. For information: 342-3342.

• The Emporia board of education will hold its final meeting of the month at 7 p.m. in the Mary Herbert Education Center, 1700 W. Seventh Ave.

• “The Glass Menagerie” by Tennessee Williams will be presented by the Emporia State University Theatre Department at 7:30 p.m. in Ronald Q. Frederickson Theatre, Roosevelt Hall. The cost is $10 for adults; $9 for senior citizens and $5 for students. More information: 341-6378. The play will perform through Friday and from March 4 through 7.

Thursday

• The Lyon County Commission will meet at 8 a.m. in the commission meeting room in the courthouse.

• Have free tea, spiced apple juice or coffee with warm Welsh cakes at the annual Tea With Welsh from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. in the Lebo United Methodist Fellowship Hall.

• Learn more about the tenets of Islam at a presentation by Imam Hassan Qazwini at 4 p.m. in Albert Taylor Hall at Emporia State University.

• Mary Todd Lincoln will be the topic at a meeting at 6:30 p.m. in the Emporia Public Library, 110 E. Sixth Ave. More information: 341-1200.

• The Annual Chili and Vegetable Beef Soup Supper at First Friends Church, Sixth Avenue and Sylvan Street will run from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Tickets cost $5 for adults and $3 for children for the meal, which will include relishes, beverages and dessert.

Friday

• The annual fundraising auction for the Flint Hills Technical College Foundation will start at 6:30 p.m. in the Emporia Country Club, 3301 W. 18th Ave. More information: 341-1313.

• “Ole Timey Rock & Roll and Vintage Country” will be presented beginning at 7:30 p.m. in the Emma Chase Cafe, 317 Broadway, Cottonwood Falls.

Saturday

• The local Special Olympics teams will benefit from the third annual “Polar Bear Plunge” at Mouse Lake, 1101 Topeka St. A pancake feed is planned at the Emporia Senior Center, 603 E. 12th Ave., before the plunge. Jumpers will move to the lake at 10:30 a.m., with plunging scheduled to start at 11:30 a.m. A potato and soup bar will be served at the senior center after the event.
