TOPEKA — Topeka High’s girls played much better Friday night than they did two months ago, the last time Emporia High played them. But right now, there’s no stopping the Lady Spartans.
Led by Lindy Arndt’s 16 points and seven rebounds, EHS flattened its ninth opponent in a row, earning a workmanlike 42-32 win that differed greatly from the 57-28 blowout the Spartans handed the Trojans on Dec. 19.
“They have some really nice players,” Emporia coach Bill Nienstedt said. “And we’re lucky that we got to play ’em really early in the season, before they could get comfortable with the stuff that they’re running. ... They’re a good team. I know their record doesn’t indicate that; I think they have a nice team. And we had to do some things and out-tough ’em there at the end to win it.”
Unlike the last time these two met, Emporia never threatened to make it a blowout — its biggest lead was 14 points — but nor did Topeka High mount a serious charge in the second half.
