EHS forensics team brings home wins

The Emporia High School forensics team has a successful speech and drama season under way, according to forensics coach Scott Bonnet. Students have placed well in seven competitions. The team also will be represented in three tournaments this week and debaters will be in Chicago for a competition.

The team opened its season at the Shawnee Heights Student Congress. Junior Drew Bonnet took third place in the Varsity Senate and senior Jake Schaefer placed third in the Varsity House of Representatives. Bonnet also placed third in Student Senate at Topeka High School.

At the Rock Creek Invitational Forensics Tournament, junior McKenna LeClear placed first and sophomore Sonia Lara second in Informative Speech; senior Adam Helmer took second in Serious Solo Acting; freshman Tagan Trahoon was second in Humorous Solo Acting; and Lara placed sixth in Oral Interpretation of Poetry.

 Sophomore Zach Windsor placed first, Jake Schaefer second, and freshman Josh Ralston third in Extemporaneous Speech at the Northern Heights Invitational Forensics Tournament. Schaefer also placed third in Informative Speech; freshman Victor Acosta placed fifth in Interpretation of Poetry; and senior Carrie Hurlocker placed fifth in Humorous Solo Acting.

Several students also placed at the Marion Invitational Forensics Tournament. Drew Bonnet took first in Extemporaneous Speech; Sonia Lara was fourth in Informative speech; freshman Dezirae Delgado and sophomore Jessica Hillbish were fourth in Duet Acting; junior Hector Urbina was fifth in poetry interpretation; and freshman Ryan Wright placed sixth in Oration.  At the Washburn Rural Student Congress, Bonnet took first in the Varsity Senate; Jake Schaefer was third in the Varsity House; and Victor Acosta was first in the Novice House.

At the Council Grove Invitational Forensics Tournament, Zach Windsor placed first in Extemporaneous Speech; Sonia Lara was first in Poetry interpretation; and Schaefer fifth and sophomore Oscar Lara sixth in Informative Speech.
