Fishing advice
Area fisherman from expert to novice can learn where the hot fishing spots are, how to catch area fish and how to clean fish during an informational session hosted by Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks next week.
The meeting, “Fishing Information Night” will be from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Emporia Best Western Hospitality House, 3021 W. Highway 50. At 6:30 p.m. there will be a demonstration on how to clean and cook rough fish such as carp and buffalo.
Marc Murrell, Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks information specialist, then will give some tips and techniques for catching walleye. Short overviews of area fisheries and best bets for spring and summer angling will be given by the department’s fisheries biologists, Carson Cox (Lyon State Lake, Toronto and Fall River reservoirs); Leonard Jirak (Osage State Lake, Coffey County Lake, Melvern and John Redmond reservoirs); and Craig Johnson (Chase State Lake, El Dorado and Council Grove reservoirs).
Presentations will be short. The public will have the opportunity to ask individual biologists questions.
Jon Stein, fisheries biologist for Marion Reservoir and local Conservation Officer Dave Adams also will attend.
Art winner
GYPSUM — A Saline County girl’s design has been selected for a flag to represent Kansas in Washington, D.C., as part of Youth Art Month in March.
Southeast of Saline fifth-grader Brooke Albright says her design is a combination of a cousin’s drawing on her wall, pieces she did in an art class last year and sunflowers. Albright said she started the design with her drawing of a butterfly and swirls and took it from there.
