Hornets show poise in win

Thursday, February 19, 2009

When Pittsburg State leading scorer Nicole McCombs fouled out with 11:22 left on Wednesday at White Auditorium, Emporia State checked out.

It didn’t much matter, though. The damage had already been done, and despite a final 10 minutes that left ESU coach Brandon Schneider fuming after the game, the Lady Hornets won easily, 85-70.

Emporia State (22-3, 16-2 MIAA) proved to be the more experienced and poised team in the first 30 minutes. Both teams were whistled for 24 fouls apiece, and although both coaches expressed their frustrations to the officials, it was the ESU players who were able to keep their cool on the court.

“I thought we handled it for about three minutes, and then we just left the building for the last 10 minutes of the game,” Schneider said. “We continued to play pretty well, and then the last 10 minutes of the game we were just awful. It’s disappointing that we would finish a game like that at this point in the year.”
