ALLEN — The Future Business Leaders of America members at Northern Heights High School are gearing up for a busy season after placing third in the District VII tournament held recently at Emporia State University
The FBLA is upping the ante this year with new projects and new categories — including partnering with an Emporia business, Sunflower Posters.
Diana Wilhite, an Emporia Middle School teacher, designs educational and motivational posters for her company, Sunflower Posters. The Heights FBLA team will come up with a business plan for the company. The members are making brochures and booklets, printing the posters to save Wilhite money, handling advertising and shipping and will design and run a Web site for the business.
The club will be paid for printing the posters but the money goes directly to production costs. The sale of the posters go back to Wilhite, said Kim Dhority, FBLA advisor at Heights.
This is the first time FBLA is taking on this type of project. To pull the project off, the entire club will have to participate.
“It’s fun to do group projects,” said Jessica Dhority, chapter president and state FBLA editor.
The Partnership with Business project is not the only one members are working on to take to the state meeting March 24 and 25 in Topeka. Other projects include a business financial plan for a gardening center and a business plan for a lawnmower business. The business financial plan requires students to draw up a plan for a business that is chosen for them, and the business plan can be chosen by the students.
Business financial plans are no easy task, said Kim Dhority. They include an income statement, cash flow statement, balance sheets and five years worth of income and cash flow statements.
Also at the state meeting, two NHHS members are funning for office. Jessica Dhority is running for another term as state editor Her platform is “Stay on Track with Jessica.” Sophomore D.J. Bronson is running for District VII vice-president with a disco platform — “The Voice of District VII.”
