Council Grove and Riley County needed two overtimes to determine a winner on Tuesday, and the game came down to the two final possessions.
After Riley County made one of two free throws, Council Grove had a chance to win the game on the final possession, but the Braves missed a last-second shot.
“Our kids played well,” Council Grove coach Bruce Hula said. “If we play our pace of play, we do real well. We got sped up a little bit, and that was the difference in the game. Riley County did a good job of speeding us up.”
Scott Bowles led the Braves with 20 points, and Derek Ziegenhirt added 13. Council Grove fell to 9-10 and finishes its season on Friday at home against Osage City. The two teams finished first and second in the Flint Hills League, and league champion Osage has won both meetings this season.

Madison boys 60,
Chase County 37
Madison learned its lesson in taking an opponent lightly last Friday. The Bulldog seniors made sure to get off to a fast start on senior night, and senior Michael Luthi scored 21 points in an easy win.
“We started all of our seniors and they played pretty well,” Madison coach Alan Brown. “Everyone got the game and everyone contributed off the bench. I felt that coming out of the White City game we did not take Chase County’s record lightly. We got out of the gate better this time, better than our last opponent.”
The Bulldogs had 10 players score with Luthi the only one to finish in double figures. Caleb Hamilton and Henry Ott both scored eight points, and Zach Nowell knocked in two 3-pointers off the bench for six points.
“We distributed the ball to our open players,” Brown said. “We got open looks. We hit nine threes. If we square up to the basket and shoot threes like we’re capable of doing, we’re going to be a tough out.”

Teeino Tabares had another excellent night for us. This young man is going to be a really great player for us down the road.”
