Kiwanis pancakes
Ticket sales have begun for the 61st annual Kiwanis Pancake Day. The event is the service club’s main fundraiser of the year and helps support youth activities.
The Pancake Day will be from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 14 in the Anderson Building at the Lyon County Fairgrounds. Tickets are $4 in advance, available from members of the Kiwanis Club of Emporia, or $5 at the door. Children’s tickets are $4. A ticket gets all the pancakes you care to eat, a sausage patty and milk or coffee. Extra sausage and milk portions are 75 cents each.
Don’t know a Kiwanis member? Call Pat Lyon, 342-6143, or Sue Klamm, 343-3788 for advance tickets.
Spelling bee is Friday
The Lyon County Spelling Bee is right around the corner.
Area spelling gurus will vie for the title of top speller in Lyon County in the spelling bee at 10 a.m. Friday hosted by St. Joseph School in Olpe. The spelling bee will be at Sacred Heart Parish Hall in Emporia.
Nishat Yasmin of Emporia Middle School was the 2008 winner of the Lyon County Spelling Bee. Nishat hung in for 17 rounds — more than two hours of spelling — to take last year’s title.
The winner and runner-up of the Lyon County Spelling Bee will go on to represent Lyon County in the regional spelling bee in Topeka. The winner of the regional spelling bee will advance to nationals.
