ESU donates books

Monday, February 16, 2009

Children’s literature that might have once found its way onto book-sale tables is instead headed for school libraries in Emporia. Emporia State University’s William Allen White Library is donating approximately 300 books to help stock the shelves of Lowther North and South Intermediate Schools and Emporia Middle School.

The books are extra copies of entries that publishers submitted for the 2008 William Allen White Children’s Book Awards competition. ESU organizes the awards competition each fall.

“They’re good books. The publishers only submit their very best books for consideration,”  said Joyce Davis, dean of university libraries and archives at ESU.

Two Emporia school librarians, Mary Beth Janssen at EMS, and Jennifer Black at Lowther, picked up the donated books. “The William Allen White competition always draws wonderful books,” said Janssen.

Several of the books provide instruction in different languages, a subject in which Black said students are interested.

“I’m really happy to see the language books,” she said. “Students are always wanting to learn new languages, and these books will help.”
