Top spellers will vie for title Friday morning

The Lyon County Spelling Bee is right around the corner.

Area spelling gurus will vie for the title of top speller in Lyon County in the spelling bee at 10 a.m. Friday hosted by St. Joseph School in Olpe. The spelling bee will be at Sacred Heart Parish Hall in Emporia.

Nishat Yasmin of Emporia Middle School was the 2008 winner of the Lyon County Spelling Bee. She won on the word quotation. Nishat hung in for 17 rounds — more than two hours of spelling to take last year’s title.

The winner of the Lyon County Spelling Bee will go on to represent Lyon County in the state spelling bee. The winner of the state spelling bee will advance to nationals.
