Scrabble players can raise money for the Emporia Literacy Program and simultaneously become eligible for an assortment of prizes, plus a light meal, at the fifth annual Scrabble Scramble, scheduled on Saturday from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Flinthills Mall.
According to a news release from the Emporia Literacy Council, competitions will be held for veteran players and novices alike, with a new “challenge” category added for people who want to go head-to-head against their friends or scrabble foes. Prizes will be awarded in each category at the end of each round.
Contestants will share a 12-foot sandwich from Subway, with chips, theater popcorn and beverages also provided.
The early-registration entry fee is $10 per person for three rounds of competition, or $20 for deluxe registration and the challenge competition, which include a T-shirt.
Walk-ins also will be accepted for the competition, though the cost will be $5 per round. Scrabble T-shirts also will be available for $10 each on Saturday.
Diane Gladow is chairperson for the event.
All proceeds will go to the Emporia Literacy Program, which offers free services, classes and tutoring to hundreds of area residents each year.
Registration forms are available at the Emporia Public Library, the Lee Beran Recreation Center, the Memorial Union Information Center at Emporia State University, and the Adult Education Center, 620 Constitution St.
Forms should be returned to the AEC before noon Friday.
