TOPEKA — The Emporia High girls emerged from the muddy mess of Friday night’s game against Highland Park sparkling clean, having easily extracted a seventh straight win out of the muck.
Overcoming a slow start that featured seven first-quarter turnovers, Emporia held the cold-shooting Scots to two points in each of the first three quarters, and the Spartans battled through the ugliness for a 42-20 win. Led by Lindy Arndt’s 17 points and, especially, a dominant performance on the boards highlighted by Lexi Hileman’s 17 rebounds, the Spartans moved to 12-4 and 6-3 in Centennial League play.
“We just know we need to keep our heads, and not let it get to us, and play our game,” said Amber Miller, who finished with eight rebounds. “And not let what they’re doing change how we wanna play.”
Emporia held Highland Park to sub-20 percent shooting (9-of-50), and nine of the Scots’ points came in the game’s final two minutes. The Spartans led by as many as 25 and opened the second half on a 12-0 run.
