Optometrist keeps busy

Emporian Bret Wise, a 2008 graduate of Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, Tenn., is on the go, dividing his time among Marion, Wichita and Emporia, where he assists at the office of his aunt, Dr. Patricia Dorsey.

Wise travels every Monday to Marion, where, he told the Peabody Gazette-Bulletin, he was “booked solid — all day.” Originally, he planned to visit Marion twice a month, but the number of patients persuaded him to increase his schedule to weekly trips.

He earned a degree in field chemistry at Wichita State University before going on to study optometry.

Teachers go to class

Two Emporia educators went back to school this month, learning how to streamline their teaching and increase student performance.

Shanan Allemang and Christi Lienemann were among seven participants at a workshop sponsored by Emporia State University’s Jones Institute for Educational Excellence. It was led by Kelly Deters from Shawnee Heights High School, a 10-year chemistry teacher, who has taught a wide range of chemistry courses in high school and college.

The participating teachers took worksheets, assignment notes and other samples of their classroom work to the session, where they learned to adapt their materials to the efficient instructional design strategies taught by Deters.

Hospice Care’s ribbon

A ribbon-cutting ceremony Tuesday morning will celebrate the new location of Hospice Care of Kansas, which has moved to 1309 W. Sixth Ave. The ribbon cutting will begin at 11:30, sponsored by the Emporia Area Chamber of Commerce.

Teresa Henderson is the director of patient care for Hospice Care of Kansas.

Sneak a peek at Expo

Reservations are due by Tuesday for a Business After Hours event, set for 5 to 7 p.m. Friday in the Anderson Building at the Lyon County Fairgrounds. Those attending will get a sneak preview of the 2009 Spring Expo, which will be open to the public from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.

Reservations, which are required, may be telephoned to 342-1600 or made on the web at www.emporiakschamber.org.

The cost is $5 for chamber members and their guests, $8 for non-members.

Foundation leaders

Jackie Scott will lead the Emporia Community Foundation’s board of trustees, serving as chairman during 2009. A trustee for three years, Scott has served as head of several committees. She is the former director of personnel at Emporia State University.

At their quarterly meeting, held last month, trustees also elected Chuck Hanna vice president and Ken Calhoun secretary.

Also elected to the board of directors were: Ken Buchele, president; Elvin Perkins, vice president; Bill Barnes, treasurer; and Perry Thompson, Diana Kuhlmann, Hanna and Scott. Calhoun serves as secretary to the board.

Jon Geitz, Thompson and Perkins were re-elected trustees at large. Kevin Nelson was appointed a trustee to represent the city. Sally Sanchez was appointed from the Emporia school district; and Barnes was reappointed to represent the Newman Regional Health Foundation.
