ALLEN — As the clock was running down on Friday night at Northern Heights, Council Grove coach Bruce Hula had to yell at Derek Ziegenhirt, “No, no, no!” as Ziegenhirt set his feet to take another shot.
It’s tough to blame the Braves’ sophomore guard. Council Grove entered the game on a six-game losing streak and shots hadn’t been falling lately. But that wasn’t the case Friday. Ziegenhirt and senior guard Scott Bowles found their shooting strokes and Council Grove found its way back into the win column, 59-52.
Ziegenhirt scored 18 points, and Bowles made 3-of-4 3-pointers and scored a season-high 19 points.
“It’s about time I started making some shots,” Bowles said. “I’ve been in a pretty good slump lately.”
It hasn’t helped that the Braves have been playing a schedule that includes mostly 4A schools that Bowles said are “bigger, faster and stronger” than the Braves.
