EMPORIA STATE UNIVERSITY Provost and Vice President Tes Mehring, who received a national teacher-education award. She received the 2009 Edward C. Pomeroy Award for Outstanding Contributions to Teacher Education.
• Emporia Schools Superintendent John Heim, who received the 2009 Kansas Superintendent of the Year award.
• Flint Hills Technical College, which converted a Dodge pickup to be powered by a combination of hydrogen and gasoline. The conversion kit cost $800 and the process took four days.
• Organizers of the Dirty Kanza bicycle race. The 200-mile race will take place May 30 and will bring 100 participants to town. The race is already sold out.
• Former Emporian Debbie Beebe, who is a contestant on the new “Survivor” television series, which premiered Thursday.
