Honored in arts

The Kansas Arts Commission has named former Emporian Kathrine Walker Schlageck of Manhattan the winner of a 2009 Governor’s Arts Award in arts education. Schlageck is the senior educator for the Beach Museum of Art in Manhattan. A dinner and awards ceremony is scheduled for June 18 in Topeka.

A news release from the commission said that she is “the driving force behind (the museum’s) education programs. Her programs have been given recognition by the National Endowment for the Arts, the Kansas Department of Education and the Kansas Arts Commission.”

Other recipients of this year’s awards are: Salina, arts community; Lannell Finneran of Lawrence, arts education; James Rivers of Topeka, artist; Dr. and Mrs. Dennis Ross of Wichita, arts patrons; and Dora Mae Timmerman of Wichita, arts advocate.

Chuck Comeau of Plainville will receive this year’s Distinguished Arts Award.

Spring Expo

Emporia’s fourth annual Spring Expo will be 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Feb. 21 and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 22 in the Anderson Building at the Lyon County Fairgrounds. The commercial exposition is sponsored by the Emporia Area Chamber of Commerce. Indoor and outdoor exhibitors will include businesses in lawn and garden, landscaping, home improvement and self improvement.

The expo is open to the public at no charge and there will be many door prizes.
