Anime movie

The Emporia Public Library will present a Miyazaki Anime movie at 2 p.m. Saturday in the large meeting room of the library. The movie is a 2004 film by the Japanese anime studio, Studio Ghibili, based on the novel, “Howl’s Moving Castle” by Diana Wynne Jones, directed by famed animator Hayao Miyazaki, distributed by Walt Disney Pictures. The film received many awards, including nomination for the 2006 Oscar for Best Animated Feature.

The movie is rated PG for “some scary moments,” stated the news release. Those attending are invited to bring their own snacks and beverages (no glass containers). Popcorn will be provided. For more information, call Lynette Olson at 340-6451.

ESU music

The Emporia State University Department of Music in conjunction with Kansas Paraguay Partners is sponsoring a concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in Heath Recital Hall featuring visiting artists of Paraguay, Liliam Rodriguez, coloratura soprano, and Diego Sanchez Haase, pianist.

The program includes representative works by Handel, Schubert, Mozart, Verdi, Villa Lobos and others, along with a section of newly arranged Paraguayan songs. There also will be an audio-visual introduction to Paraguay, its history, unique music traditions and styles.

Rodriguez holds the Superior Degree in Vocal Performance and is a well-known soloist on concert stages of Paraguay. Sanchez, conductor of UniNorte Orchestra in Asuncion, is a professor of conducting, an award-winning composer and concert pianist. Rodriguez, in her first tour abroad, and Haase are presenting five concerts and conducting master classes at ESU, Fort Hays State University, Washburn University and Wichita State University.

• At 3 p.m. Saturday, Dean Sommerville, tubist, will perform in Heath Recital Hall.

• The Jazz Concert will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in Albert Taylor Hall. General admission is $5; $4 for students and senior citizens. Information: 341-5431.

• There will be no admission charge for the High School Jazz Band Festival to be held from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Feb. 20 in Albert Taylor Hall.

• The ESU Department of Music presents the Wind Ensemble Concert at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 24 in Albert Taylor Hall. Information: 341-5431.

Exhibits

• Artist Teresa Kirk of Pemroke Pines, Fla., will have her art work on display from 5 to 10 p.m. Feb. 20 and 21 at 2914 W. Highway 50. There will be live music and food at $5 a plate. Kirk, a former resident of Emporia, graduated from Kansas State Teachers College in Emporia. She is a member of Florida Watercolor and Gold Coast Watercolor societies, along with Southern Watercolor, Hollywood, Pembroke Pines and Plantation Art guilds. She is director of the Florida Watercolor and workshop chairman of the Gold Coast Watercolor Society.

• The ESU Valentine Invitational Art Show will be held through Saturday at the Emporia Arts Council, 618 Mechanic St. The closing reception will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday. All works will be for sale with proceeds to benefit ESU art scholarships. EAC is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. Information: 340-6473.

• Continuing through March at the ESU Norman R. Eppink Gallery is the Engraving Invitation Portfolio, which includes 25 artists from all over the country. The purpose of the exchange is to celebrate the technique of engraving in printmaking, stated the press release. Curators are ESU associate professor James Ehlers and associate professor Gerry Wubben and Larry Schuh, both from McNeese State University.

At The Noose

The “Co-Dependents” band, Wade, Bill and Taylor, will perform an eclectic mix of 60s and 70s classic rock music at 8 p.m. Saturday at The Noose, 323 Commercial St.

These are three musicians from three different decades who grew up in three different regions of the U.S.A. who “each bring a diverse style to this great trio,” stated the news release. Seating is limited.

On Feb. 23, Legend Mobile Music, a “low-key disc jockey with a remarkable range of oldies hits from the Great Depression to the early 90s” will perform from 8 to 10 p.m. at The Noose. No cover charge.

ESU theater

“The Glass Menagerie” by Tennessee Williams will be performed at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 25-28 and March 4-7 in the Ronald Q. Frederickson Theatre on the ESU campus. For tickets, call 341-6378.
