Monday Conversation is an interview with a local person. This week’s interview is with Greg Jordan, executive director of the Lyon County Historical Society and Museum. The Historical Society will hold its annual meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Lyon County Historical Museum, 118 E. Sixth Ave.
Q What activities will take place at your annual meeting?
A We will first have a short business meeting to elect new officers, and they will be Joyce Kennedy, Steve Hanschu, and P.J. Steven. After the meeting, we will have John Neff from the University of Mississippi who wrote a book on Lincoln called “Honoring the Civil War Dead” and he will lead a discussion on Lincoln. The event is open to everyone.
Q What do you have planned for the historical society this year?
A We will have three new exhibits this year. We will have one exhibit on one-room schools during the Dust Bowl, one called “Sign of the Times,” which will feature advertising and the other is to be determined. Right now we have the Brinkman train exhibit, an exhibit on the Vietnam War, one on theaters and one on travel.
Q What are you hoping the new board will accomplish this year?
A Keep the word out there about the historical society, keep the visitors up, have them let people know about the need for more members. The (Emporia) sesquicentennial has created a lot of momentum for us. Our numbers have been up every month since the sesquicentennial. This year we have had about 14,000 visitors.
Q Any major fundraising campaign this year?
A Every time we decide to do a fundraising plan, someone else jumps in front of us. A town our size it is really hard to have one or two going on at the same time. So probably not this year.
Q What are your needs?
A We always have a need for volunteers. We just want people to come visit the museum, the research center and the Howe House.
