Northern Heights girls easily beat Solomon, improve to 14-2

Saturday, February 7, 2009

The Northern Heights girls used 24 points in the first quarter to cruise to a 60-39 victory over Solomon on the road Friday.

The Ladycats held their opponent to only 19 points in the first half as they built a 17-point halftime edge. Heights also won the rebounding battle, pulling down 28 boards to SHS’s 24.

“I thought we played very well tonight,” coach Tim Riemann said. “It was a long bus ride for us, but the girls came out ready to play. We shot the ball extremely well the first quarter and jumped out to an early lead. The rest of the game, we did a good job of executing and did a good job of finding the open man.”

The Ladycats (14-2) jumped out of the break with a 17-7 third quarter to put the game away for good. They were led by Andrea Miller, who finished with 19 points, four rebounds and six assists. She was joined in double figures by Amy Lee with 16 points and Sarah Boline who added 11. Amy Boline and Tess Hobson led the way on the boards with five rebounds apiece.

“I thought defensively we played pretty well and did a good job of forcing them to shoot some tough shots,” Riemann said. “I was very proud of our effort out there tonight.”

“I think it really hurt us when Michael Luthi fouled out,” coach Alan Brown said. “I was really proud of how Wade Elwood came off the bench for us with a great effort.”

Elwood finished with ten points and was joined in double figures by Hamilton with 12 points and Luthi with 11.

“The theme of tonight was missed opportunities,” Brown said. “We missed some free throws and had a couple of defensive breakdowns. They did a good job of taking advantage of hitting free throws. For us, the opportunities were out there. We just didn’t take advantage.”
