Meet a Gazette Mom

Saturday, February 7, 2009

Krystee Pearson

Age: 37

Location: Emporia

Occupation: Full-time mom and communications supervisor at the Emporia police department

Family members: Husband, Shawn, 43; Chelsea, 18; Ethan 16; Tarah, 13

The last time my children made me laugh: Every time they tell a story.    The television mom I’m most like: Sharon Osbourne. My husband is not a rock star; however, we live in a house that is always full of teenagers, animals and music.

My favorite outdoor activity to do with my children: Ethan plays football and pole vaults during track, Chelsea played soccer when she was in high school and Tarah will be participating in track this spring. Sitting in the bleachers and cheering for them is my favorite thing to do outdoors.

The most important life lesson I want my children to learn: I want them to be accepting of all people.     My proudest moment as a parent: When I hear Chelsea sing, watch Ethan play sports and see Tarah perform in a play.

The thing about my younger self that I’d like to reclaim: My carefree attitude. I never worried about tomorrow.

My favorite book to read to my children: They won’t let me read to them anymore. I like to read books that they are reading (or have read), so that we can talk about them.

My favorite kitchen gadget: My favorite kitchen gadget isn’t really a kitchen gadget, but I love my chocolate fountain. Actually I have two, one for white chocolate and the other for milk chocolate. We look for excuses to bring out the fountains.

My no-fail stress reliever: Diet Pepsi and amaretto fudge from the Sweet Granada.  Favorite way to slow-down as a family: Every couple of months we take weekend trips and get away together as a family. Over Christmas we spent a weekend in Kansas City. A week ago we went to Des Moines to see the musical “Spring Awakening.” The trips are usually short and we don’t go far, but we always have a great time together.

The kids’ toy or game I will never understand: Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh cards? Ethan used to play with them when he was in elementary school. Ten years later I still have no idea what those things were.    When I have 30 minutes to myself: If I had 30 minutes to myself I would take a nap! I love a good nap.

The future parenting moment I fear the most: The day that one of my kids move out on their own. I love having my family all together under the same roof.

The biggest challenge I’ve faced as a parent is: Now that my kids are older it is hard letting them make decisions about their lives that are different from what I would choose for them.

If I could change places with anyone, living or dead, it would be: I would change places with one of my kids, like the movie “Freaky Friday.” I would like to see their lives through their eyes.

If I had an “I’d rather be...” bumper sticker on my car, it would say: “At the beach!”

My favorite way to show my kids I love them: By being their biggest fan.
