ESU softball splits doubleheader
The 25th-ranked Emporia State softball team opened its season with a doubleheader split on Friday at No. 18 Colorado School of Mines.
The Hornets won the first game 8-4 in an eight-inning affair, with Jenna Potter’s bases-loaded double in the top of the eighth providing the winning runs. Emporia State lost the nightcap 7-4.
Olpe trio sign with Independence
Three Olpe football players have signed to play at Independence Community College, Olpe coach Chris Schmidt said.
Linebacker Josh Lambert, defensive back Wade Schmidt and offensive lineman Michael Dieker will join the Pirates next season after being part of this year’s Class 2-1A state runner-up.
Two ESU women finish in top three
The Emporia State women’s track team put up a pair of top-three finishes in Friday’s women’s portion of the Mule Relays in Warrensburg, Mo.
Christy Weller finished second in the 600-yard run with a time of 1 minute, 27.99 seconds, and Kathryn Davidson was third in the 800 meters with a time of 2:21.95.
