Exhibits
The ESU Valentine Invitational Art Show will be held through Feb. 14 at the Emporia Arts Council, 618 Mechanic St. The closing reception will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Feb. 14. All works will be for sale with proceeds to benefit ESU art scholarships. EAC is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. Information: 340-6473.
Continuing through March at the ESU Norman R. Eppink Gallery is the Engraving Invitation Portfolio, which includes 25 artists from all over the country. The purpose of the exchange is to celebrate the technique of engraving in printmaking, stated the press release. Curators are ESU associate professor James Ehlers and associate professor Gerry Wubben and Larry Schuh, both from McNeese State University.
Recital
The ESU Department of Music presents the Brass Day Concert at 4:30 p.m. Feb. 13 in Albert Taylor Hall. At 3 p.m. Feb. 14, Dean Sommerville, tubist, will perform in Heath Recital Hall. The Jazz Concert will be at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 19 in Albert Taylor Hall. General admission is $5; $4 for students and senior citizens. Information: 341-5431. There will be no admission charge for the High School Jazz Band Festival to be held from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Feb. 20 in Albert Taylor Hall.
‘Mockingbird’ coming
The Montana Repertory Theatre will perform “To Kill a Mockingbird” at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 28 in Albert Taylor Hall on the ESU campus. For more information or tickets, call the Emporia Arts Council, 343-6473.
Kansas in concert
The legendary rock band, Kansas, will perform with the Washburn University Orchestra for a concert and the creation of a live concert DVD at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at White Concert Hall on the Washburn University campus.
The event, which commemorates the band’s 35th anniversary, will feature musical highlights spanning the collective catalogue with performances by special guests and the 50-piece WU Orchestra, stated the press release.
Tickets cost $75, $100 and $200 and are available only at www.kansasband.com. All ticket purchases will include a final copy of the anniversary DVD, “There’s Know Place Like Home,” upon its release, at no additional charge. Formed in Topeka in 1970, the band’s self-titled debut album was first released in 1974.
Author dinner
The fourth annual Kappa Kappa Gamma Kansas Author Dinner will be held in Wichita on Feb. 27 at the Hotel at Old Town, with a cocktail reception at 6 p.m.; dinner at 7 p.m.; and author presentations and book signings at 7:30 p.m. Tickets, $50 each person, must be purchased by Feb. 20 by calling (316) 733-8764. Featured authors include Emporian Max McCoy, who will discuss his most recent novel, “Hellfire Canyon”; Mike Everhart, “National Geographic Sea Monsters: Prehistoric Creatures of the Deep”; and Deborah Raney, “Remember to Forget.” A portion of the proceeds will benefit literacy programs such as the FUNdamental Learning Center and Reading is Fundamental (RIF).
