Heights’ Swanson, Nuessen ink with jucos

Northern Heights had two football players ink with Kansas junior colleges during Wednesday’s national signing day.

Wildcats kicker Stephen Nuessen signed to play with Coffeyville Community College. Nuessen was selected as the kicker for the All-Flint Hills League team and The Gazette’s All-Area team last season.

Teammate Derrek Swanson signed to play at Independence Community College. Swanson was an honorable mention All-Flint Hills selection last season at linebacker.

Eighth grade A-team crushes S. Heights

The Emporia Middle School eighth grade A-team blasted Shawnee Heights by a 62-24 score on Wednesday, continuing its thus-far undefeated season.

Jackson Perez led the Vikings (9-0) with 19 points and four assists, Jerrel Morrow scored 11 points and grabbed 12 rebounds and Michael Kitselman had 13 points and three steals. Sean Ford added eight points for EMS.

The eighth-grade B-team scored a 31-30 victory over Heights on a last-second shot by Noel Torres. Trent Appling had 18 points for the Vikings, and Torres had six steals and six rebounds. Also grabbing six boards were Dylan Jackson and Cole Cullumber.

The eighth grade teams are in action again today at home against Junction City. The A-team’s game, its first-round league tournament game, begins at 3:30 p.m.
