Lyon County commissioners had a busy agenda Wednesday morning in their only meeting of the week.
During the meeting, Doug Stueve of the Lyon County Council on Aging gave a departmental update. Among the items he discussed was the LCAT ridership numbers, which have been on a steady increase. Thirty-two percent of the riders are elderly and 32 percent are disabled with another 36 percent of the riders being the general public.
“I think some of the publicity and promotions are paying off a bit,” Stueve said. “I think it’s continuing to grow and providing some much needed services for the community.”
Friendship Meals in Lyon County also is doing well, having served 54,000 meals in 2008, with 30,000 of those being home deliveries, Steuve said.
Stueve also discussed Lyon County’s prescription discount card.
“There still does continue to be use on that card,” he said. “People who don’t have any other prescription insurance seem to get a pretty substantial reduction.”
About 357 people in 2008 made drug claims to the plan.
“In about 66 percent of cases that were submitted, they saw a reduction in price,” Stueve said. “Generally about 31 percent as an average savings. For people who do not have any other form, the program does seem to have a benefit.”
In other matters:
• Commissioners approved the reimbursement of $5,750.51 to the Lyon County Road and Bridge Fund for the repairs of the playground area at Emporia Child Care Center III. The repairs were done to prevent future flooding into the child care center and re-direct the water away from the building.
• Commissioners approved a request to send three K-9 officers to a conference in Las Vegas for up to $3,300. The money will come from the Drug Forfeiture Fund, which by statute can only be used for drug training and drug enforcement, said Lyon County Attorney Marc Goodman. The fund has no relation to the county’s general fund, Goodman added.
• Commissioners appointed Tammy Vopat and Vicky Reynolds as public information officers for Lyon County in disasters at the request of Rick Frevert of Lyon County Emergency Management.
• Lyon County commissioners voted to accept the IMT trailer and sign the equipment agreement for the Homeland Security trailer. The trailer will be stored in Lyon County.
• Commissioners voted to sign a utility agreement with Lyon-Coffey Electric Cooperative for the replacement of the Coal Creek Bridge.
• Commissioners voted to pay the second payout for the ADA remodel in the amount of $33,582.
• Commissioners approved sending Ken Barrows to two training classes — one for driver training for LCAT and one for a training to review the Kansas Department of Transportation grant.

Our class did a Lyon County survey during the last month and this was a huge benefit to those who have troubles getting to the Lyon County Health Dept. for care. What a huge benifit L-CAT is to the community accompanied with friendly and courtious staff. More people should take advantage of L-CAT. Maybe the Gazette could post a schedule and route to encourage its use (hint, hint). Keep up the good work!
