Krause breaks diving record at EHS home finale

Monday, February 2, 2009

Emporia High’s divers have been the strength of the boys swimming and diving team all year long, and Saturday’s senior day was a day for diving accomplishments.

Seniors Brett Schaefer and Sam Nolan put up state-qualifying performances, and junior Derek Krause broke his own school diving record, helping the Spartans finish in third place out of seven teams at the Emporia Invitational.

Krause put up 419 points off the board on Saturday, breaking his previous mark of 390. He attributed his success Saturday to feeling comfortable diving at home.

“He did everything that we’ve been going through all week, and it all came together, and he finally concentrated,” Spartans diving coach Barbara Clark said. “It was like he should’ve been diving all year long. He was just really focused this time and just did well.”

A sixth-place finisher at last year’s state meet, Krause has his sights set on bettering that showing this year. He already had qualified for state before Saturday, and swimming coach Bob Yevak was happy to see Schaefer and Nolan earn their spots with their second- and third-place performances this weekend. Schaefer rolled up 383.70 points, and Nolan had 313.30.

“They did really well — I mean, more than I expected,” Clark said. “I mean, they were focused. Sam really put it together — I mean, I’ve had him all four years. And finally seeing him do well... this is his first time going to state, so this is really exciting for him.”

To Yevak, Clark is a big reason why those three divers will be headed to Topeka on the weekend of Feb. 20.

“I mean, Sam’s been at it for four years, and Brett comes in the first year and qualifies it,” Yevak said. “Barb, she gets it done.”

The Spartans had some of their best performances of the year swimming-wise as well. Dillon Supiran, one of Emporia’s seniors, swam to a second-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 55.24 seconds, two-plus seconds behind Kapaun’s Ryan Zwick. The 400 freestyle relay squad of Cord Stanley, Ryan Sclup, Tommy Hudson and Supiran earned a second-place finish in the day’s final event, clocking 3:50.37. The 200 medley relay team — Supiran, Jacob Hastings, Cody Yevak and Hudson — finished fourth with a time of 1:57.95. Just missing top-five finishes were Stanley in the 50 freestyle, Schlup in the 500 free and the 200 free relay team of Stanley, Yevak, Russell Patterson and Justin Garcia.

One swim that impressed coach Yevak came from Seth Morey, who raced in the 500 freestyle for the first time on Saturday. With the Spartans conducting a battle for their third spot in that race, Morey cracked the top 10, finishing 10th with a time of 6:55.06.

“He went under seven minutes,” Yevak said, “and he swam it like I told him to.”

The day-ending dive in the pool for the senior class was a bittersweet one for at least one Spartan facing his final weeks of swimming at EHS.

“It felt really good, and kind of a little sad at the same time,” Supiran said, “knowing that I’ve only got a few swims left before it’s all over.”
