Wind, dry conditions cause fires

Lyon Countians ignore advice

Sunday, February 1, 2009

Some Lyon Countians who apparently had not heard warnings not to start fires in recent days saw several of the fires re-ignite and burn nearby properties on Saturday.

A rural Reading resident had burned an old hay bale in a cattle feeder Saturday morning and thought the the fire was out, until wind blew embers out of the feeder and set a pasture and neighbor's property on fire about 1:15 p.m. on Saturday, according to the Lyon County Sheriff's office activity log.

About an hour later, a trash fire that apparently had been started on Tuesday in the 2000 block of Road 105 near Hartford. The fire burned about an acre of grass and destroyed an old chicken coop, the log stated.

Approximately one hour later, a third fire re-ignited in the 1900 block of Road 20. The property owner had started a fire in an old bay of hay on Wednesday evening. Winds on Saturday rekindled the embers and started a fire that burned approximately 100 acres of neighbors' grass.

Firefighters had a fire at the Allen dump under control shortly after the fire was reported at 6:18 on Saturday.

Authorities advise not to start fires when conditions are dry and windy, as has been the case the past several days.

Why do they even have to have warnings? What ever happen to using common sence? We live in Kansas people, when the winds are over 15mph, DON'T BURN! If we haven't had rain in weeks or even months, DON'T BURN! Come on, use the brain God gave you. And for those of you that throw your cigarette butts out the car window, please DON'T. That is what starts alot of fires when it is this windy and this dry.

I thought these senseless fires would surely not happen anymore now that Bush is gone.
