AMERICUS — In an innovative way to get students interested in reading, just more than a dozen fourth graders performed a play based on the book “The Ranger’s Apprentice” by John Flanagan.
Denise Cottenmyre, librarian at Americus Elementary School in Americus, asked the students she was reading to if they would like to perform the speaking parts of the book. The students agreed and on Dec. 18, the final day of classes for the semester, they performed the book in full costumes.
“One thing led to another,” Cottenmyre said. “They were eager to perform. I was trying to get them interested in the book and now I think I’m not going to be able to keep it on the shelf.”
For students, the play was fun and was a learning experience. They each read from scripts during the play.
“It was fun and I liked the costumes,” Elizabeth Murray said.
Avery Lupkes played the Baron, the play’s leading role.
“I liked having the most parts,” Avery said, adding that performing the play wasn’t hard.
For Michael DeWeese, the play gave him the opportunity to do something he loves — a love for the performing arts he shares with his mother.
“I mostly like having fun with friends,” Michael said. “I did something that I always wanted to do. My mom was a play director. ... I want to act. It’s fun.”
Michael said he enjoys acting — especially mysteries.
“Me and her (Mom) both like mysteries,” he said. “You never know who did it until the end.”
Other students liked the pace of the play.
“It was really cool,” Macayla Miser said. “And active ... and loud. It was fun.”
