Madelynns has been seized by the Kansas Department of Revenue for a second time, this time at the request of owner Jean Woods. A liquidation auction will be held to pay for back taxes owed to the state.
In a phone conversation, Woods said she made the call to the Department of Revenue and asked them to take over liquidation of the items.
“We’re all cooperating,” Woods said. “It’s not a bad thing. This has always been the goal. We’ve been talking. They were just kinda waiting. It was really my decision. We can’t have a liquidation sale forever.”
Woods said when the store was initially seized, the entire basement was full of inventory.
“You’re talking about moving a massive amount of inventory,” she said. “We’ve done that.”
Freda Warfield of the Kansas Department of Revenue in Topeka said the department had to take possession of the contents of the building again.
“(We) had to re-seize and take possession of items and change the locks and so forth,” Warfield said.
The store was originally seized by the Department of Revenue on Sept. 1 for failure to pay retailers’ sales and withholding taxes. Warfield said a date has not been set for the auction.
“I have to move on with my life,” Woods said. “My husband has to move on with his life. This has been a very taxing and very emotional. It’s time to move on.”

Well boo hoo about poor Ms Woods. I'm glad the time since Sept 1 has been "very taxing" for her, since all these years she didn't pay her taxes due, by her own choice. It was high time to face the consequences and pay up. When you're years behind in paying taxes due, you're not going to be the one calling the shots in how and when the payments will be made. I hope the Dept of Revenue gets every penny she owes them, plus all the late penalties, and compensation to cover all of their time in getting the tax money.
I hope that when the store is sold the new owner completely changes it so there is no reminder left of her or the business. I consider it to have been a business with a pure nose-thumbing attitude towards every other business and individual who keeps current with their tax obligations. Her years of tax evasion just can't be overlooked as a simple mistake. She knew what was required with the taxes, but chose otherwise time and time again.
I wish all creditors of Ms. Woods the very best of success in getting all of the money she owes them, and all the very best of success to anyone else who may have a lawsuit filed against her.

I don't know about "evil" but not paying nearly $100,000 in taxes certainly isn't good and at that amount I would say it might be getting close to habitual. I remember hearing horror stories about young brides not being able to get their wedding dresses and stuff that they had already paid for. This may not seem like a life ruining experience to a lot of people but to a young lady planning her wedding it kinda is, atleast for awhile. My wife has helped a couple of her friends coordinate their weddings and it gets really intense. Being a dude, I don't really get it but I have seen how serious the gals take this stuff. This tax evading lady knows how much weddings mean to young ladies, she saw it all the time.

Beo, get real would you. Young ladies who had ordered their wedding gowns and made down payments not only did not receive their gowns, they lost their down payments as well. One young lady said she had saved and saved for a long time to make the down payment only to lose it all. For a young woman, that is a ruination. Weddings are all about the dress.
Yes, evil habits. For one thing, she didn't pay her taxes, a cut of which goes to the city of Emporia. So we all lose. And the people working for her received paychecks that bounced -- young college girls trying to make ends meet, or young mothers trying to do the same. Have you ever received a bad check? Most banks charge you for that and it's not even your fault.
And not paying withholding taxes? FICA? This country depends on all that. And don't tell me that she was only one person. Bull! This is getting deep, Beo and you're not paying enough attention.

I've looked down at the speedometer a few times and realized that I was going 35 or so in a 30 mph zone and had to correct my mistake, this is a transgression that can take only seconds, but $100,000? 'round here that is not a small amount of money to the vast vast majority of people. $100,000 Wow! That's a lot of smackers!

Has there been a story on here about it? There has been like 3 stories about Madelynn’s. When that Mundy woman was under investigation we weren't very kind to her questionable business ethics either. Some of us are against crime even if we ourselves have the occasional heavy left foot or cross the street when the don't walk guy is blinking. One does not have to be perfect to be against crime, if they did no one could be against crime. It's ludicrous that when people come out against crime other people jump all over them for various reasons. Just recently there was a bunch of folks that got busted committing a crime and when some of us said we were against that crime we were branded racists and some posters started going off on how other races were so much better than whites. It's amazing what will make people tolerate crime, from petty theft all the way up to murder.

Beo, so now you're playing the semantics game and grasping at little straws. Like I said before, get real. The story is about Madelynn's and no one else. If another individual has done the same thing, it matters not in this story. Besides, how do you know whether or not that other individual is paying back taxes on time? You don't. Woods was given that same opportunity and failed.
When this story first appeared, many comments were made. Ms Woods daughter-in-law got on here and virtually screamed at all the posters, telling us we were all wrong, that we were all horrible people, and that a mistake had been made by the State. Before long, we learned the ugly truth. Did that woman ever get on and post an apology? Hell no! What a family. They must all be in denial.
Of course you're involved. You live here don't you? Your city runs on the funds it receives from Topeka. If it doesn't receive those funds, services are cut, and already we have learned that some workers have been furloughed. THAT hurts. Maybe it doesn't hurt you in your very own pocketbook, but it hurts others who depend on a paycheck.
I haven't researched what percentage of Madelynn's nearly $100,000 the city missed out on, but it's a chunk when budgets are being slashed. And what about those employees who worked for her who never got their paychecks? What a crock! What a phony that woman is! Now she wants to unload her problems on the state? What cheek! That goes beyond fraud. That is thievery! She has stolen from the people of Kansas in more ways than one.
And don't tell me her son had no idea this was going on. You can't manage a business and not know. Didn't he see all the mail with requests for payment? Didn't the State Tax representative make a few personal calls? Did Casey Woods turn a blind eye?

If you are against crime.....chances are good you are not a criminal. If you are a criminal you are probably not against crime. This is pretty elementary stuff. But it can get more complicated that that. Say you were against crime but didn't know a particular act was criminal....then you might find yourself to be a criminal even though you were against crime and therefore technically not a criminal.
On the other hand you might be in favor of crime without actually committing one....then you would be a criminal without crime therefore technically not a criminal. So it seems to me its not quite as simple as it started out to be. Because of that I wonder if it might not be best to follow the Christian tenet to hate sin...not the sinner.
But none of this has anything to do with the case at hand other than maybe the part about sin and sinners. Furthermore.....it is just my opinion. And is in no way intended to claim that it is the only worthwhile opinion...nor that I believe it is an opinion of any more value that any other opinion that might be expressed here.

Beo: Here, let me point it out. I just posted your quote above. You must have missed it. Here it is again: "Flush, I think the difference between you and I is that for me, it's not personal."
The inference here is that just because it is not personal to you, you are not concerned. It is this indifference to the plight of others that made me say you were not being a good Christian.
Besides, as I tried to explain above, you are indeed involved personally because you live here. When local merchants pay their sales tax, a percentage of that sales tax is earmarked for Emporia. Madelynn's share did not get to Emporia because even though she collected it at the point of sale, she didn't pay it to the state. SHE POCKETED IT!!! That means she STOLE it from the people of Kansas.
She is partially responsible for the budget cuts we have been experiencing. Some have lost their jobs!!! But what am I saying? You don't know those people.

Steve,
I fail to see the logic in your statement, she defrauded customers, employees and taxpayers. It is common practice for people that commit crimes of this nature to go to prison. Losing one's freedom for awhile is the true moniker for teaching her a lesson, just because a crime is about money does not make it any less a crime.
If everyone including the state was to be reimbursed I would have pity on her but it's not going to happen. The state will lose in that they will not recover all the money that is owed in taxes less the cost of taking this project on. Employees will lose in that they will have to sue for wages lost, and in that will lose more time that will not be recoverable, and customers will lose in that merchandise will not be delivered and time spent planning and making decisions with this business will have to be done over. There are so many intangibles here that are not accounted for, yet this women will likely file bankruptcy, pay a few fines, and most likely come out of it pretty well. A little prison time for her to reflect on what she did would be worth it to me as a taxpayer.

Tax due, but not paid+

Interest=

And since the original seizure by the state how much has been paid back and how much more interest has accrued?

Yup Steve, it would be a better story. What we need to hear are facts and not gossip. It would be nice to see the whole picture, including the process used to collect taxes. For example, why is the state going after Madlynns and not Wheat State or S&S.
YY...the crime you mention is physical..."brute force," "knocks you down." That, in my opinion, is a far worse crime than someone who simply steals your $50, or $100,000. It is also a crime against an individual, not society, so prison is more likely to be warranted. On the other hand, someone who "steals" $100,000, but has done no physical damage will be far more productive as a member of society than if he or she were put behind bars at the expense of the state.
