Jaguar posts shine in victory

Wednesday, December 16, 2009

Hartford got career nights from post players Chris Schwinghamer and Jon Sliter to beat Flinthills 53-33.

Guard Adam Ewy led the Jags with 16 points, but the guards tried to play through Sliter and Schwinghamer. Sliter scored 12 points and Schwinghamer scored 10, both career highs.

“Our guards between Adam, Colten (Barrett) and Michael Wilson, did a nice job feeding the post,” coach Chuck Ewy said. “That really helped even things out as far as our balance offensively. I was real pleased with our effort in that direction.”

Sliter and Schwinghamer also helped Hartford control the boards, which was a big key to the win.

Hartford improved to 2-3 with the win and does not play again until Jan. 5 at home against Burlingame.

“I think we’re in a good spot and have shown improvement,” Ewy said. “We have some specific things we can go to work on coming into Christmas break.”

In a game in which both teams strung together key runs, Heights got the game tied at 59 with less than two minutes to go before Mission Valley scored the final six points. Mission Valley’s Dalton Marcotte killed the Wildcats with a 30-point effort.

“Our shooting was very good tonight, but we could not keep from turning the ball over,” Heights coach Lanny Massey said. “We couldn’t defend Dalton Marcotte in the first quarter and fourth quarter.”

Heights fell behind 17-5 before going on a 17-7 binge to pull within two points in the second quarter. Three consecutive 3-pointers by Mission Valley gave them a more comfortable lead before Heights pulled within 47-42 by the end of the third.

Teeino Tabares led Heights with 15 points, and Nathan Campbell had 10. The Wildcats shot 55 percent from the floor but had 25 turnovers.

Hartford girls 57, Flinthills 32

Hartford started fast, jumping out to an 11-1 lead by the end of the first quarter, then poured in 20 points in the second to take complete command of Tuesday’s home matchup with Flinthills.

“I think we pushed the ball better, at least learning how to push the ball and not hurry, and that was better,” first-year coach Megan McGuire said. “If we wouldn’t have had them on the line... we probably would’ve had a better lead, but I think definitely pushing the ball (was key).”

Ashley Preeo scored 12 points to lead Hartford, and Mikayla Wilson had nine. The comfortable lead gave McGuire plenty of time to look at her bench; she had two freshmen, two sophomores and a junior on the floor together for much of the second half.

“And to be honest, the end of the game, pointwise, doesn’t show it, but I had some younger girls that stepped up and played really well,” she said.
